What VOCO does
VOCO is a language learning tool that helps you learn vocabulary from YouTube videos. You paste a video link, click words in the subtitles, and get AI-powered explanations.
Data we collect
- Account data: If you sign in with Google, we store your name, email address, and profile picture to identify your account. We never see or store your Google password.
- Vocabulary data: Words you save, your review progress, and associated video context (video title, subtitle text). This is stored locally on your device by default. If you sign in, it syncs to our secure database so you can access it across devices.
- AI conversations: Messages you exchange with the AI assistant about word meanings are stored alongside your saved words to preserve context.
Data we do NOT collect
- We do not track your browsing activity outside of VOCO.
- We do not use tracking or advertising cookies, and we never follow you across other websites.
- We do not sell, share, or rent your personal information to third parties.
- We do not serve advertisements.
Analytics
We use Vercel Web Analytics to understand aggregate usage — such as page views, country, and device type — so we can improve VOCO. It is cookieless and privacy-friendly: it sets no tracking cookies, builds no profile of you, and collects no data that identifies you personally.
Where your data is stored
Your account and vocabulary data are stored and processed in the European Union (Ireland). When you look up a word, only the relevant content — the word and the surrounding subtitle text, never your name, email, or account ID — is sent to our AI providers (Google Gemini and Groq) to generate the explanation. That processing may occur outside the EU under standard data-protection safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses). Under their API terms, neither provider uses your content to train their AI models; they keep it only briefly, for safety and abuse detection.
Third-party services
- Google OAuth: Used for authentication. Google receives a standard login request. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Google Gemini AI: Your word queries and subtitle context are sent to Google's Gemini API to generate explanations. See Google AI Terms.
- Supabase: If you sign in, your vocabulary data is stored in a Supabase database with row-level security — only you can access your own data.
- Stripe: If you upgrade to Premium, payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your card details — Stripe handles all payment data directly. Stripe receives your email and the plan you selected. See Stripe's Privacy Policy.
- Groq: An AI provider used to generate word explanations — it powers the free tier and acts as a fallback when Gemini is unavailable. Only the word and its surrounding subtitle context are sent — never your personal account information. See Groq's Privacy Policy.
- Supadata:Used as a fallback to fetch video subtitles when they aren't otherwise available. It receives the video link only.
- Vercel: Hosts the application (servers located in the European Union) and provides the cookieless Web Analytics described above.
Cookies
We use a small number of essential cookies required for the app to function: authentication session cookies (so you stay logged in) and security cookies (CSRF tokens). We do not use marketing, analytics, or tracking cookies.
Your rights
You are in control of your data. You can delete your account at any time from your profile — this permanently erases your profile, login details, saved vocabulary, history, and settings from our database, cancels any active subscription, and removes the personal link from our internal usage logs. To request a copy of your data (data portability), email us and we will respond within 7 days.
